| Glass: Regular single strength, non-glare (frosted one side),
acrylic (plastic), conservation (blocks 97% ultraviolet rays, anti-reflective (coated
surface like a camera lens). Mat board: A spacer board to move the art away from the glass, comes in a large variety of designer colors. It is made of either wood pulp or rag fiber. Nowadays both are acid-free, but for conservation purposes rag board is preferred. Fillet: A fillet is a decorative wood frame that usually goes next to the art. It comes in a variety of colors and designs including gold and silver. It will be backed with a rag board to separate it from valuable art. Rag back: To keep valuable art in a state of conservation, only acid-free rag board should touch the art front and rear and the art should be hung from acid-free hinges, never mounted (glued) to a backing board. Foam core backing: We use foam core for safety and rigidity. It provides an extra layer of insulation and it's stiffness gives strength to the overall frame. It is held in place by "points" that are driven into the frame. Dust cover: After all components of the framing job are in place, a paper dust cover is glued to the back of the frame. It will not only keep dust out of the frame package, but also helps keep insects out. And it just looks good! |
