The Story of Wassail

Wassail has been a part of the English Christmas custom since medieval times. The name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon "was hal," meaning "be hale." Originally it was made by adding select spices to a quart of ale. Those who could not afford to make their own Wassail carried wooden bowls through the streets while singing Christmas carols -going a' wassailing - in hopes of being given some of the delicious warming brew.

The aroma of Wassail in your home brings back memories of special times shared together. We hope you and your family enjoy this unique beverage as much as we do.

Serve one another in love.     Galatians 5:13

Each package of Wassail is mixed and heated, with one gallon of apple cider or apple juice. The flavor of the Wassail is the same in all three packages, just the box "gift packaging" is different. It is soooo good!

Don't be fooled by the English, though, as Wassail is not just for the Holidays! From the time the leaves start to turn until the ice thaws in the Spring, Wassail makes a great hot beverage anytime during the cooler months of the year.

For Wassail with a zing, brew it with cranberry or cranapple juice instead of apple juice.

Some of our friends in the South like to serve Wassail with banana bread or zucchini bread, while our friends in the Midwest have a long-standing tradition of serving Wassail and donuts.

Many families enjoy Wassail at Christmas while they decorate the tree together, or while Grandpa tells all the Children the story of the First Christmas.

As a new tradition, write yourself a letter while you are boxing up the Christmas decorations after Christmas and place it in with them to be stored. The letter can share your goals or dreams for the new year, or whatever you choose. It will be a wonderful treasure next year to read as you put out the decorations.

After Christmas, some families serve Wassail on New Year's Eve, and others save a few boxes to serve during Super Bowl parties.
