COURAGE
Life Values Collection II

The moral order of God’s universe is like an exquisite tapestry; the foundational values ofthe good life interweave in a seamless whole.
In my Life Values Collection, I explore the connections between these divinely inspired values. Perseverance, the first issue, considers life as a voyage through stormy seas – a test of faith and a demonstration of God’s sustaining love. COURAGE, my new Life Values painting, expands on the metaphor of a sea voyage, bringing us to the moment of divine inspiration, when God graces us with courage beyond the merely human – the resolve we need to overcome any obstacle.
I make full use of a vocabulary of personal artistic symbols to convey this message: God rewards our perseverance with His gift of courage. Our lone sailor has come within sight of a lighthouse; the beacon of divine love will guide him to shore. Smoke curls from the chimney of the keeper’s solid brick cottage, hinting at domestic comforts within. A sublime radiance breaks through the clouds, embracing the boat in its holy light. I painted COURAGE at a time when
I was especially grateful for God’s hand of deliverance in my life. May it remind you that courage is, truly, a gift from the Almighty.

—Thomas Kinkade

Symbolism in Thom's art

Thomas Kinkade grew up in Northern California in the small town of Placerville. Though the family did not have wealth, Kinkade often says they were "rich in the greatest form of wealth; a nurturing and affirming love." His first "collector" was his mother, who would frame his childhood drawings and use them to decorate the family home.

Thomas Kinkade is renowned for infusing light into his paintings, creating incredibly romantic and tranquil scenes. Known as "the Painter of Light," Kinkade has an almost uncanny ability to recreate dramatic effects of pictorial lighting in a way that makes the image seem to glow from within. This famous "Kinkade glow" might help explain Kinkade's enormous popularity as a published artist. Indeed the creations of Thomas Kinkade have become a phenomenon unprecedented in recent times, with countless millions of "Kinkade Collectors" worldwide.

Kinkade has received numerous awards for his works, most recently the 1995 Lithograph of the Year Award and 1995 Artist of the Year from the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers and the 1994 Collector Editions Award of Excellence. He was honored, along with idol Norman Rockwell, as a charter inductee into The Bradford International Hall of Fame for plate artists. He is regularly featured in well-known magazines and as a guest on popular TV network shows and radio talk shows throughout the country. Further, Kinkade's paintings have been the subject of many art books.

Thom named his 4 daughters after famous artists. Do you know the artist's names?

Merritt was named after William Merritt Chase.

Chandler was named after Howard Chandler Christy.

Winsor was named after Winsor McCay.

Everett was named after John Everett Millais.
